Amino Acid-Based Cholinium Ionic Liquids as Sustainable Catalysts for PET Depolymerization

Chemical recycling to monomers is one of the key strategies in tackling issues deriving from persistent plastic pollution environment, and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) among most used polymers modern society. In this context, we herein describe glycolysis PET bis-hydroxyethyl terephthalate (BHET), promoted by basic cholinium salts differing for anions, also comprising amino acid anions. We investigated optimal reaction conditions, finding that best-performing catalyst [Ch][Gly], presence which a conversion 85% yield 51% are achieved at 150 °C after 6 h, clear water bottle. our protocol carry out different postconsumer waste, like opaque colored bottles food packages, performance better former compared with latter starting materials.
